Ku’uipo Kumukahi is a true artist and entertainer of Hawaiian music. She is a self taught musician that was influenced by family songs. Ku’uipo who was penned “The sweetheart of Hawaiian music” has made her presents with the voice that has made her known throughout the state of Hawai‘i, the continental United States, and abroad. Ku’uipo who is originally from the Big Island, Hawai‘i continues her deeply rooted traditions, knowledge, and values which is ever present in her singing, songwriting, language, and culture.
Ku‘uipo who was a very promising artist from the beginning captured five “Na Hoku Hanohano Awards” on her third album “Na Hiwa Kupuna O Ku‘u One Hanau” in 1994. She was recognized as “Female Vocalist of the Year” and winning the “Best Traditional Hawaiian Album” category. Four years later Ku’uipo came back on a roll at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and receiving an award in 1998, 1999, and again in 2000 as “Female Vocalist of the Year”.
Ku’uipo currently resides on the island of Oahu and plays regularly at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center on Friday’s. She is very passionate about her music, culture, and the art of hula, all of which can be seen at every performance, here and abroad. Her mission is to produce, preserve, perpetuate and promote quality in Hawaiian music as well as its performance which includes the use of Hawaiian language. She also strives for the use of artistry, mannerism, and values that are unique to Hawaiian music and hula.
Although, Ku’uipo works full-time as the manager for the Diamond Head Center for the Association for Retard Citizens of Hawai‘i, she has found the time to partner up with the “Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame” and recorded “Na Lani ‘Eha”, which features songs that was composed by the Kalakaua siblings, two of which were the final rulers of the Hawaiian Kingdom and winning yet another Na Hoku Hanohano Award in 2008 for “Album of the Year”.
Ku‘uipo Kumukahi, is a very active member of the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (HARA). A year before she was Vice-President of the organization and now the current 2009 President. Her goal is to increase participating membership, education, and outreach. She has teamed up with many organizations, groups, and most recently with the Music Entertainment & Learning Experience program at the Honolulu Community College in her efforts to educate and promote Hawai‘i’s recording industry.
