Melveen Leed was born on the Island of Molokai. She made her first "public appearance" at age three, when she sang "My Yellow Ginger Lei" for her Grandmother's friends.
She attended Kilohana Elementary and Intermediate School; Radford High School; Honolulu Business College; Maui Technical School. Also, she received her Associates Degree in Secretarial Science.
Melveen won numerous beauty queen awards. She took 1st place as Ms. Aiea and 4th runner-up Ms. Teenage Molokai; 4th runner-up Ms. Hawaii 1962. She would go on to win the KPOI "Sing-a-Long" contest with the song, "Save the Last Dance for Me". 4 years later at the age of 21, Melveen began singing at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Garden Bar with the Berne' Hal-Mann Dance Band.
She released her first album in 1966 and started to travel abroad, singing in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Russia, Bulgaria, Hong Kong, Japan and many other places around the world. Melveen returned to Waikiki in 1971. She entertained locals and visitors alike with her strong voice, pretty face, and local style humor.
In 1976, Melveen enjoyed a regular guest stint on "Hawaii Five-O" and even sang at the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Fanfare in Nashville, Tennessee. She was the first Hawaiian to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
1978 brought Melveen a Na Hoku Hanohano award for "Best Female Vocalist" of the year. She teamed up with American Savings Bank and Professional Football Player Russ Francis in a very successful Radio, Print, and Television Ads.
Melveen entered the business world in 1985, launching MELCO Hawaii. Her projects included a talent division, record production, a school of music, and an endowment fund. To pacify her creative side, Melveen also started to design jewelry made from shells, pearls, and Austrian crystals. Melveen has 27 recordings to her credit, and is in the process of recording a new CD.
Melveen was part of a wonderful group known as the Local Divas, made up of 4 of the top female vocalists in Hawaii. Melveen taught a voice and performance class at the University of Hawaii in Windward.
Melveen is currently a member with the New Hope Church, where she devotes her time and efforts with her talents and testimonies. Her most recent album "Listen To My Voice" has got to be the most spiritually driven work thus far. Melveen is a multi-talented individual who has done it all. She is also in the midst of writing an autobiography called "If Only....". After 45 years and coming full circle, Melveen married the love of her life and first love, Al Dacascos.
